About

Our Mission
Our mission is to lead English-speaking individuals and families to achieving their literacy goals. By increasing public awareness of common and invisible literacy challenges, the EQLC identifies and responds to the evolving needs of our community.
Our Vision
To provide leadership in promoting awareness of the increasing importance of literacy in our modern world.
Our Activities
Our regular activities include a tutoring program, a quarterly newsletter, an active social media presence, and a drop-in service for those seeking help with specific issues. We also offer workshops, activities, and events throughout the academic year, tailored to the needs and interests of community members.
Our History
The Eastern Quebec Literacy Council (EQLC), one of eleven literacy councils in Quebec, has been serving the many communities in our territory since 1984. Our territory includes communities along the Gaspé coast, the North Shore, and the Magdalen Islands.
We work in close partnership with other organizations to support English-speakers in reaching their learning goals. We offer the opportunity to work in a one-on-one setting with a tutor who will meet learners where they are and help them hit small and large milestones. We focus on different types of literacy, outreach, and broadening community understandings of literacy and how many ways it affects everyday life. Our projects include workshops and events that promote tutor formation, family and digital literacy, and community engagement.
The EQLC was formerly the Gaspésie Literacy Council. Our name was changed in 2025 to better reflect the communities we serve.
